State Cup 2013
May 24-27  *  Idaho Falls, Idaho

Ten Idaho Rush teams will make a run at a state championship when they kick off play at the Idaho State Cup beginning Friday, May 24, in Idaho Falls. Among the favorites are the U13 boys, who will attempt to defend their title from last year, and the girls U14 Nike-Blue and girls U16 Nike teams, who are looking to become the second Idaho Rush girls team ever to win a state title. The U15 boys lost in the semifinals last year and are poised to make gains this year, while the U16 boys have a legitimate chance to make their first-ever title match. The U19 boys have already claimed their fifth State Cup championship, albeit in an uncontested age group.

We will update this tournament web page as the tournament rolls along, adding scores and updating schedules when Rush teams gain the semifinals and finals, as neeed. To add game photos or stories about particular teams in the tournament, e-mail Mark French.

Girls U14 Nike-Blue CHAMPIONS
The Rush girls have been through a lot in the past month or so, but they were able to put aside off-field concerns for the weekend and focus on the task at hand: winning the State Cup title. Despite losing their coach just before a string of year-end tournaments, the girls were able to show professionalism and class on the field. Their undefeated and untied run through the State Cup tournament earned the club its second girls championship in history and sets them up for a repeat in 2014. If there is a downside, it's that the girls won't be rewarded with the traditional trip to Far West Regionals, which is in Honolulu this year. The team chose not to attend because of the travel expense, and Region IV does not accept State Cup champions to the USYS President's Cup, so the team will have to be content with a job well done.

The boys continued the club's tradition of having at least one back-to-back champion for the fifth straight year. But it wasn't easy for Rush, as they had to play a semifinal every bit as worthy of a final and then grind out a win in the final when the goals weren't quite falling like they were supposed to. In their four games at State Cup, only one was decided by more than two goals, showing the quality of the competition. Like the girls U14 team, the boys declined the opportunity to advance to Far West Regionals, so a win the in the final will serve as a proud end to the season.

The boys wanted one more shot at Far West Regionals, so they returned from their respective college teams to form a U19 team specifically for Regionals. Because they were the only U19 boys team to enter State Cup this year, they were automatically crowned champions, their fifth such title in eight years. Fifteen players, including 10 players from last year's state championship team will make the trip.

Other finishes

State Cup daily roundup
Day 1
Rush opened the tournament with a 3-3-1 split in seven games Friday evening. The U14 girls started strong with the Nike-Blue team grinding out a 1-0 win over Fury and the Nike-White team drawing with Idaho Torrent 1-1. Both teams still have a lot of work ahead of them, but the possibility of an all-Rush final in that age group stayed on track. The U13 boys took their first step toward the final with a 3-1 win over PVSC of Pocatello in their first-ever State Cup match, while the U15 boys opened the tournament in a big way, rolling PVSC 5-0. You can follow all of the scores online at the IYSA web site
DAY 2

Four teams earned their way into the semifinals Saturday and two more are on the cusp of doing the same after a long day on the fields. None of the four teams in the semifinals made it undefeated, but each finished in the top four of a six-team bracket:

  • The boys U15 Nike team opened the tournament with a win Friday but lost a heartbreaker to Coeur d'Alene Sting 2-1 on Saturday. Sting helped the Rush cause Saturday afternoon, though, by beating PVSC, putting the boys into a Sunday morning semifinal against local rival Nationals-Liverpool. Rush beat Nationals 2-1 two weeks ago in league play, but the two teams have gone back and forth over the past two years.
  • The boys U13 Nike team followed the exact same path as the U15s, winning their first game but dropping their Saturday game 2-1 to Sandpoint Strikers. But Sandpoint came through for Rush, beating PVSC to punch Rush's ticket to the semifinals, where they will face Boise rival Natinoals-Arsenal. Nationals beat Rush twice during the spring season in league play.
  • The boys U16 Nike team opened play Saturday morning with a tight 1-0 win over Ballistic of Idaho Falls, but lost to Nationals by the same score in the evening game. The morning win was enough for a berth in the semifinals, though, where they will face former State Cup champion PVSC.
  • The girls U13 Nike team didn't win a game in pool play but a 2-2 draw with Idaho Thunder was enough to get them in to the semifinals, where they will face another team from north Idaho, Coeur d'Alene Sting.

Two other teams still have a chance to to reach the semifinals or finals, including the girls U14 Nike-Blue team which has won all three of its games so far. They have one more game to play Sunday in their four-team pool, against Coeur d'Alene Sting, which is also undefeated so far in two games. The girls must win to advance to the finals. The boys U14 Nike team also faces a must-win game Sunday against longtime rival Nationals-Inter. Both teams are 2-0 so far in the group stage and only one team will advance out of their pool. The boys went 1-0-1 against Nationals during spring league play.

It wasn't all good news for Rush, though. The girls U16 Nike team lost a heartbreaker to Nationals 1-0 in their only game of the tournament so far. The girls can still win a State Cup title, but they will need to win all three of their remaining matches and have Nationals lose both of their final two games. The girls U14 Nike-White team also dropped their afternoon match, 2-0 to Twin Falls, ending the dream of an all-Rush final in the U14 girls age group. The boys U14 Swoosh and girls U15 Nike team have been eliminated from title contention.

Day 3

Two teams will play for state titles Monday after winning key games Sunday:

  • The girls U14 Nike team cmpleted its undefeated run through group play with a 2-0 win over Coeur d'Alene Sting Sunday morning to earn a spot in the final. Jesse Cole and Olivia Overstreet notched a goal each to put Rush up 2-0 by halftime, and the back line carried the girls through to the final whistle. Rush outscored their opponents 9-1 in four games. The girls will play either Idaho Torrent or Twin Falls Rapids depending on the outcome of Torrent's final game Sunday afternoon. Reaching the final is a huge step forward for the U14 girls, who crashed out of the group stage last year.
  • The boys U14 Nike team will look to defend their State Cup title from last year following a hard-earned 1-0 in over Nationals-Inter. Ivan Vasquez scored midway through the second half to put the boys on top, and Rush survived a nervy final few minutes to seal the win. Rush will face Lakeland Nighthawks in Monday's final. The boys will look to put a win on the board earlier than they did last year, when they needed penalty kicks to beat PVSC the final.

Four other teams stopped just short of the title match, each losing a semifinal or must-win game on Sunday. The boys U16 Nike team squandered a golden opportunity for their first State Cup championship when they lost 2-0 to PVSC in the semifinals. Defending State Cup champion Nationals was upset by Nova in the other semifinal. The boys U13 Nike team and boys U15 Nike team both lost semifinal matches to Nationals, 8-1 and 4-2, respectively, to end up in the 3rd/4th-place game on Monday. And the girls U13 Nike team was shut out 2-0 by Coeur d'Alene Sting to end their run.

Day 4

Idaho Rush went 2-for-2 in State Cup championship games on Monday, including the club's second-ever girls state championship. Including the boys U19 championship in an uncontested age group, the club matched last year's haul of three championships.

  • The girls U14 Nike team completed its undefeated run through the State Cup tournament with a 2-1 win over Idaho Torrent-White.  Rush built a 2-1 halftime on the strength of goals from Megan Harvey and Jesse Cole. Cole's goal came on a free kick from just outside the penalty area. After the break, the girls relied on the same well-organized defensive effort that had allowed a single goal through four games leading up to the final. Rush's win is the first girls State Cup title since the spring of 2008, when the girls U17 Nike team accomplished the same feat.
  • The boys U14 Nike team won their second straight State Cup championship with their 2-0 win over FC Boise Monday morning. The boys beat FC Boise 10-0 in their previous meeting so the team had winning on their mind. But FC Boise had other ideas. Rush capitalized on a scoring chance through Skyler Munroe to make it 1-0 after about 10 minutes. The scoring chances kept coming but Rush had trouble putting them away, and FC Boise looked dangerous on the counterattack. Halftime saw a 1-0 lead for Rush, and the second half started with more of the same -- close chances for the boys and big saves from FC Boise. A three-player combo seasled the win in the 60th minute when Manasse Mbuyi found some space the right-hand side, centered the ball to Kobe Terashima, who back-heeled a pass to Justus Kjellander. Kjellander knocked the ball home for the final 2-0 scoreline.

Idaho Rush had other successes on Monday, too, with three teams winning their consolation games to claim third place. The boys U13 Nike team rallied from their loss in the semifinals to earn a 2-1 win  over Idaho Thunder, the boys U15 Nike team cruised past Real Nampa 2-0, and the girls U13 Nike team eked out a 1-0 win over Fury-Velocity to claim third-place honors for each of the teams. The boys U16 Nike team lost 1-0 to Nationals-Milan to finish in fourth place.
